Pointer #2

             Meaning is Key

Children should be encouraged to use the pictures for clues about  the story.  You may be tempted to cover the pictures up and test how well they know the words. Please DO NOT do this. Imagine reading a story written in a foreign language with no pictures to look at. It would make reading the story very frustrating and you would soon feel like quitting.  With a picture you can at least make a meaningful attempt. Keeping the meaning of the story going is critical in figuring out unknown words and understanding what they have read.

*If your child gets stuck on a meaningful word try saying:

"Think about the story.  What would make sense."

"Check the picture."

*If your child substitutes a word for a correct word and it makes good sense.  Allow them to continue reading.  They may catch the mistake themselves.  If they don't, go back when the story is finished and say,

"On this page what you said made sense, but the words didn't match.  Try it again and see if you can find the word that tricked you."
