First Grade

Homework Policy

Your child will  be expected to complete some formal homework in First Grade. However, these are things that will help your child make the most of what they learn in school. Remember reading to children at home and involving them in family activities will greatly assist the development of their skills in literacy, numeracy and problem solving.

I do not assign graded homework.  However, Reinforcement activities may be sent home at various times during the year to meet individual needs. I encourage parents to show interest in their child’s daily educational efforts by discussing what they have learned at school that day and by setting aside time to regularly read.

Any homework assigned provides a link between school and home.  It offers parents an opportunity to have a positive impact on their student’s education.  Homework is assigned to reinforce and extend skills taught in school.    It also helps students develop good habits and attitudes about schoolwork. Homework teaches children to work independently, encourages self-discipline and responsibility, and fosters a love of learning. However I believe it should be minimal at this grade level

Guidelines for Homework Times (nightly)

First Grade              10-15 minutes

Reading Homework

Reading Bag (read or be read to nightly) . With very busy family schedules nightly reading may not always be possible, but even reading one short book on these nights will make a difference! The reading bag will be sent home every night and should be returned every day.  You may also want to consider supplementing your reading with school and public library books, books already on your bookshelf at home, and with book orders.

Math Homework

Comes home EVERY Friday in the Math Activity Binder and will have a homework indicator in the upper right hand corner.  It should be returned by the following Friday.  Sometimes it may be an activity (game) that needs to be played and the recording sheet is all that you need to return, sometimes it may be a story problem, and it may just be practice of a concept we are learning.  The directions for the activity my be kept in the math binder.  The Math Binder MUST be returned on Monday morning so that it is available for use during math instruction.
